Distinguished Professors
The Foundation's roster of Distinguished Professors now includes 15 faculty members spanning the arts, sciences, medicine, business, engineering, and the humanities. The Foundation recently announced the appointment of classicist and historian Fred Drogula, who will join UVA faculty in 2027.
About the Program
The Foundation's Distinguished Professorship Program is built on a single premise: exceptional students deserve to learn from exceptional teachers. Through endowed professorships across multiple disciplines, the program attracts nationally recognized scholars to the University of Virginia and gives them the freedom, resources, and proximity to talented students that ambitious scholarship requires. Holders of the Foundation's professorships are leaders in their fields and active participants in the intellectual life of the Foundation, mentoring students, hosting seminars and small dinners, collaborating across departments, and modeling what rigorous, engaged inquiry looks like in practice. Each professorship is supported in perpetuity, ensuring that the University can recruit and retain outstanding faculty whose work shapes national conversations in areas ranging from economics and public policy to artificial intelligence, neuroscience, law, and the humanities. The result is an academic community defined by depth and success.
Program Impact
Having secured approximately $259 million to support its Distinguished Professorship Program, the Foundation has been able to attract faculty to the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Education and Human Development, the Darden School of Business, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Law School, the McIntire School of Commerce, and the School of Medicine. Active searches are ongoing for five additional professors. Looking ahead, the Foundation aspires to support 25-30 outstanding faculty members at the University.
