AT A GLANCE

As the largest organization dedicated to merit awards at any public institution in the country, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation identifies and supports top talent across three major areas at the University of Virginia: faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate programs across multiple schools and departments.

UNDERGRADUATE

The Foundation offers two prestigious merit scholarships: the Jefferson Scholarship and Walentas Scholarship. High schools nominate students, who then undergo a rigorous selection process led by UVA alumni and friends. Scholars receive full financial support for four years, enrichment opportunities like global travel, and access to the Foundation's extensive alumni network.

GRADUATE

The Foundation funds top-tier graduate students through the Jefferson and National Fellowship Programs. Candidates are invited to apply based on exceptional academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential. Fellows receive support tailored to their specific area of study and are selected by UVA alumni, faculty, and friends.

FACULTY

Through its Distinguished Professorship Program, the Foundation attracts to UVA outstanding faculty across a wide range of disciplines. Additionally, the Foundation honors exceptional current faculty with annual teaching awards, ensuring that excellence in research and instruction continues to thrive at the University.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation is to benefit the University of Virginia by identifying, attracting, and nurturing individuals of extraordinary intellectual range and depth who possess the highest concomitant qualities of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship.
